Trama
Incaricato da Elaine Sampson, su consiglio dell'avvocato Graves, di indagare sulla scomparsa del ricco marito, il detective Lew Harper (Newman) incomincia a scavare tra le amicizie dell'uomo. Le indagini però non danno alcun esito anzi, spesso Harper si caccia in brutte situazioni, dalle quali lo salva il provvidenziale arrivo di Graves. Solo dopo la scoperta del cadavere di Sampson Harper smaschererà il colpevole.
