Trama
Durante un sopralluogo in una cava, Charley "Boomer" Baxter, un minatore, provoca attraverso una forte esplosione una scossa sismica che apre una profonda faglia sulla crosta terrestre. La sismologa Amy Lane si accorge che la frattura si sta dirigendo verso il centro del Nord America e quantifica in 24 ore il tempo massimo per riuscire ad evitare una catastrofe.
