Trama
Leon Bernstein, in arte 'Bernzi', campione del fotografi 'free lance'di un'America alle prese con i problemi della recessione degli anni '40, fotografa di tutto, ma soprattutto morti ammazzati e gangster. Conosce tutti i poliziotti e tutti i delinquenti, e mantiene prudentemente un atteggiamento neutro dal punto di vista etico: lui fotografa soltanto, e tenta invano di vendere un album di istantanee ad un editore che glielo pubblichi. Incontra ad un party una fascinosa vedova, Kay Levitz, che ha ereditato un club dal marito, ma si vede spuntare presunti soci, non molto graditi, da ogni parte.
