Trama
Hoffmann, innamorato della ballerina Stella, racconta a un gruppo di studenti la storia di tre suoi antichi amori: quello per una bambola che credette una donna; quello per Giulietta, che voleva imprigionare la sua anima in uno specchio; quello per Antonia, che morì quando decise di infrangere il divieto che le proibiva di cantare. E raccontando si rende conto che il suo destino è di essere poeta.
