Trama
Anni Sessanta. Un sottomarino sovietico di nuova produzione viene inviato a sperimentare il lancio di una testata nucleare. Il natante ha qualche problema di costruzione e l'equipaggio non è dei più preparati. È per questo che il timone viene affidato a un comandante inviato da Mosca (Ford) che fa passare al ruolo di comandante in seconda il precedente responsabile (Neeson). I due hanno diverse concezioni del dovere e il conflitto esplode quando si verifica una perdita nel nucleo radioattivo che fa da propulsore al mezzo.
